Present Perfect or Past Simple

Present Perfect fits an unfinished period connected to now; Past Simple fits a finished past time. The time marker often decides the choice on its own.

  1. Present Perfect vs Past Simple

    When to use it
an unfinished period that still includes now takes Present Perfect: I have seen her twice this week
a finished period in the past takes Past Simple: we visited Rome last year
experience up to now is Present Perfect, then the specific occasion is Past Simple: Have you been to Japan? When did you go?
the form follows the choice: have/has + past participle or the past form, never mixed

    Subject
    Time context
    Ihaveseen herthis week

I have seen her this week.

This week is an unfinished period that includes now, so Present Perfect fits.

    Common mistake
I saw Maria twice this week.I have seen Maria twice this week.
This week still includes now, so the period is unfinished and takes Present Perfect.
Once a conversation starts in Present Perfect, every later question must stay in Present Perfect.
Present Perfect opens for experience, then the talk moves to Past Simple for the specific event, time, or place.
